Jaroslav Volf
hockey forward, Kladno former player, Kladno hockey legend, World Championship medallist, successful coach, three-time national champion coach.
A native of Kladno; he came from a sports family of Kladno neighbourhood of Dubí, he was an excellent Czech handball player, thus he played handball for Tankista Prague; he played hockey very well before the military service, after returning from there, he joined the former Baník Kladno under the guidance of coach Vlastimil Sýkora; he proved successful in the legendary forward line of Kopecký-Froněk-Volf, Kladno’s famous ‘peasant ride’; its uniqueness is demonstrated by a remarkable productivity – e.g. 135 goals in 41 games in the 1957/1958 season (Jaroslav Volf himself scored 44 goals as a right wing).
He celebrated the historic first title of Kladno with his line and the entire team in the 1958/1959 season, the more valuable as the team played all home games in Prague due to their arena reconstruction; he became the king of league scorers with 28 goals in the 1962/1963 season; he was distinguished by his excellent physical condition, speed, skating stability, tremendous strength in the arms and ice hockey wit; he played in 283 league games scoring 195 goals in the blue and white jersey of Kladno.
Played 29 games scoring 13 goals for the Czechoslovak national team; together with the national team, he won bronze medals at the 1959 World Championship held by Czechoslovakia; our team famously won 5-3 in the last game against Canada with Vlach’s empty netter; he gave an excellent performance in this game, being on the ice while our team scored two goals (he scored our second goal after Jiřík’s pass), Canadian punchers sat on the penalty bench after a foul on him.
He played in Chomutov at the end of his career; he began coaching the Kladno youth team; he took over the Kladno A-team in May 1973 with the team, winning three championship titles in 1975, 1976 and 1977 under his excellent leadership; he devoted himself to a challenging coaching in the coming years, twice with the Kladno youth team, the former Gottwaldov, the Prague teams of Sparta and Slavia; his ill heart prematurely ended the life journey of this hockey fighter.
