hockey icon, right wing, Kladno hockey former player, one of the best hockey players in the world, legend of world hockey, the most productive European and the absolute best in the NHL history, two-time Stanley Cup Champion, Olympic champion, two-time world champion, Czech Ice Hockey Hall of Famer, eleven-time winner of Zlatá hokejka (‘Golden Hockey Stick’), Czech Sportsperson of the Year, Triple Gold Club member for winning the Stanley Cup, Olympics and World Championship, holder of many other trophies and statistical records, honorary citizen of the city of Kladno.
A native of Hnidousy, now part of the Kladno Švermov district; he started playing ice hockey in mite team PZ Kladno showing exceptional abilities from the very beginning; at the age of 16 – in 1988 – he played for the A-team POLDI SONP Kladno in the second highest league competition; he was nominated for the World Championships in Switzerland in 1990 where he won the bronze medal. The number of games played at the highest national competition level for Kladno is 152 games with 81 goals; he willingly played great games for Kladno during the NHL lockouts – the first in 1995, followed by sold-out Czech arenas during the 2004/2005 and 2012/2013 seasons.
Within the NHL, he was drafted in 1990 by the Pittsburgh Penguins where he made an excellent pair with Mario Lemieux; he won the 1991 and 1992 Stanley Cup with this team; he has been awarded numerous individual awards in the NHL: as the only European player in the NHL history, he has become a five-time holder of the Art Ross Trophy for the most productive NHL player, has won the Lester B. Pearson Award for the best player in the NHL by players voting three times and the Hart Trophy for the Most Valuable Player in 1999. He is a regular member of the first NHL All-Star team and a 12-time NHL All-Star Game participant; he played 1,550 games, scored 722 goals, has 1,080 assists until the end of the 2014/2015 season, thus earning 1802 points; he has a balance of 202 matches played, 78 goals and 121 assists for 199 points in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he leads the historical chart of the NHL in winning goals – 129; he holds many, many more record entries in the world’s best hockey league; besides the Pittsburgh Penguins, he has joined the Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils and Florida Panthers in the NHL.
He was named the 2005 Czech Sportsperson of the Year, awarded the Golden Hockey Stick for the best Czech hockey player eleven times; he has represented the national team in 152 games, scoring 55 goals, playing at ten World Championships, five Olympics, two Canadian Cups, one World Cup; he is a member of the winning team at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, thus significantly contributed to perhaps the greatest success of our sports history; he was awarded the honorary citizenship of the city of Kladno for this achievement in 1998.
In the 2004/2005 season, he played for Avangard Omsk of the Russian Superleague, returning to this club 3 years later to play another 3 seasons in the Continental Hockey League. His name greatly helped to increase its prestige. Playing in Russia, however, he lost a large number of potential points in the NHL; having these, he would most likely hold a historic second place in the All-Time Points Leaders chart of this most prestigious hockey league.
Jaromír Jágr is one of the few members of the informal Triple Gold Club for winning the Stanley Cup, Olympics and World Championship; this also proves the absolute uniqueness of this exceptional sportsperson.
